​Wednesday 12 March marks No Smoking Day and is the perfect opportunity for smokers across Wandsworth to set their goal and quit smoking.

No Smoking Day is supported by the British Heart Foundation and this year’s theme is entitled 'V for Victory' and shows that for many the fight to stop smoking can be a difficult one but one that they can ultimately win with the right support.

Everybody has their own personal reason for wanting to stop smoking. Some people quit as part of a larger lifestyle change - to be healthier, to get fit, or to save money. For some, it’s more about how their smoking affects the people around them – their family, friends, and little ones. Whatever your reason, thinking carefully about your own motivation and keeping a reminder in key places can really help to keep you going through the tough times. 

It is easy to forget just how much damage smoking does. Smoking causes about 81 per cent of lung cancers in England and can give rise to cancer of the mouth, lips, and throat, as well as the bladder, kidney, liver and stomach. Smoking harms the lungs putting smokers at increased risk of chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and pneumonia. It also damages the heart and blood vessels – increasing the chance of a heart attack, stroke and circulation problems
